About
I grew up as a military brat, traveling more before I was 10 than most are fortunate enough to do in a lifetime. We moved to Columbia, South Carolina when I was 10, and that's where I grew up. After graduating high school in 1988 I moved on to Virginia Tech for undergraduate and graduate studies.
In 1995 I entered the corporate world full time, and I bounced around the southeast until eventually landing in Baltimore in 1997 with an industrial sales territory. I verified quickly that the corporate world wasn't for me, and I started digging deep to figure out what on earth it was that I was suppose to be doing to make a living.
One of the options that presented itself was renovating properties. I had minimal construction background but figured with an engineering degree and a Masters in Business, it was certainly something I could do (hah!...what was I thinking!?) I purchased my first home in 1998 ( a shell...a crack house actually..) , and in the summer of 1999 I limped (crawled) into my first completed project. 3 months late and 25% over budget, per my records. My carpenter and I logged 2300 hours each in a 9 month period of time (and somehow I was still squeezing time in for my full time job!?). It took me three months to physically recover, but once I did, I decided that rehabbing was my ticket out of the corporate world. I moved on with a second purchase, and that was completed in the spring of 2000, and on April 16, 2000 I turned in my final notice with corporate America. :-)

627 S. Paca Street was my fifth full rehab project and 625 S. Paca was number 12 or so. From 1997 thru 2011 I completed ~18 properties ranging from 1200sf row homes to several 4000sf single family and multi-unit buildings. In August 2011 I shut the door on my last rehab project. I started a small metal art business to pay the bills until I could figure out what came next. (http://www.studio617.com)
In February 2012 Holly was awarded a 3 year grant in Monterey Bay California. I decided that was my cue to dust off my programming skills and reinvent myself as a technology entrepreneur. She moved to California in August 2012 and I transitioned out in December 2012. My goal is to be in California ~80% of the time at a minimum, and I'm in Baltimore as needed to manage businesses there. No matter which coast I'm on my email and cell phone is always active and I have a lot of local support for maintenance and emergency needs.
One of my fondest memories as a child is repeated trips to a Gaste Hause in Garmische Germany. Ironically, I remember the lodging as much as I remember the scenery (and that is likely one of the more beautiful places I've ever been). I never imagined myself in the hospitality business, but I've been doing this now since 2007, and when I look back at my childhood experiences and my fondest memories, it all kind of makes perfect sense.
